Susan Basler – Subadesigns
Subadesigns is a textile design studio established by Susan Basler, based in south Sligo. Susan makes elegant, enchanting and contemporary textiles for lovers of wonderful things. From award winning digital print design to intricate felted and embroidered work, Susan loves combining traditional techniques with a contemporary twist. Felting and embroidery is her first love and wool is a wonderful, versatile and luxurious material to work with. When introducing stitch to felt it reveals the subtleties of the material and creates a vibrant, lively texture that infatuates the eye. Susan takes a contemporary approach to the designing and the making combining traditional felting techniques with freestyle embroidery and cutting techniques. Inspired by the natural world she creates hand-drawn and painted artwork from her own photography. ‘I spend a lot of my spare time outdoors and my camera lets me capture the seed that later becomes a design collection.’ From the artwork design ideas are developed and then brought to life by sampling and then making the final piece.
Suzie Sullivan’s lifelong passion for craft work began as a child in Cheshire in the UK, with stitching, knitting and crocheting. Throughout her life she has always had hobby projects on the go but could only have dreamt where it would lead. She has always had a fascination for Ireland and all things Irish and moved to Mayo in 2001 with her husband Steve. She loves what Ireland has to offer – music, culture and the wide open spaces – and all of this is reflected in her work. She is now known throughout Ireland and beyond for her work in fibre art and flame worked glass. She has won several prestigious awards in the felting category of the RDS National Craft Competition. Her latest venture is The Quay Gallery, Westport, a jointly owned business run by Suzie and three award winning artists. Suzie also shares her knowledge by giving innovative workshops in a wide range of crafts from her studio, which is situated 9 miles south of Westport.
Victoria Foutz Bijoux
As a Colombian~Irish designer living in rural Ireland just beyond Westport, County Mayo, my studio overlooks an enchanted emerald panorama of fields and mountains dominated by Croagh Patrick. My work is inspired by this vivid imagery of nature that surrounds me. I treat it as a source of primal energy in its purest form that drives my instincts and enhances the passion that I feel for my craft and creations. I live in nature, work with a palette of natural materials and consider myself in harmony with the universe. And this is my inspiration which is reflected in my work.
